Overview
The Department of Pulmonology at BAMTH specializes in the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the lungs and respiratory system. Given the high burden of respiratory disease in Pakistan — including tuberculosis, asthma, COPD and the aftermath of COVID-19 — this department plays a crucial role in community health.

- Asthma — diagnosis, management and patient education
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Community-acquired and hospital-acquired pneumonia
- Tuberculosis (TB) — diagnosis, DOTS treatment, and MDR-TB management
- Lung cancer — diagnosis and coordination with Oncology
- Pleural effusion, empyema and pneumothorax
- Interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Bronchiectasis
- Hemoptysis (coughing blood) — investigation and management
- Post-COVID respiratory complications
Diagnostic Services
- Spirometry and pulmonary function tests (PFT)
- Peak flow monitoring
- Sputum analysis, culture and sensitivity
- Bronchoscopy and BAL (bronchoalveolar lavage)
- CT chest imaging (in cooperation with Radiology)
- Thoracentesis (pleural aspiration)
- Intercostal drain insertion
TB Prevention & Anti-Smoking Program
As part of BAMTH's community health mission, the Pulmonology Department runs an active TB prevention and anti-smoking program, providing free TB testing, DOTS treatment, and smoking cessation counselling.
