PULMONOLOGY (CHEST MEDICINE) Department

The Department of Pulmonology at BAMTH specializes in the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the lungs and respiratory system. Given the high burden of respiratory disease in Pakistan — including tuberculosis, asthma, COPD and the aftermath of COVID-19 — this department plays a crucial role in community health.

• Asthma — diagnosis, management and patient education
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
• Community-acquired and hospital-acquired pneumonia
• Tuberculosis (TB) — diagnosis, DOTS treatment, and MDR-TB management
• Lung cancer — diagnosis and coordination with Oncology
• Pleural effusion, empyema and pneumothorax
• Interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis
• Obstructive sleep apnoea
• Bronchiectasis
• Hemoptysis (coughing blood) — investigation and management
• Post-COVID respiratory complications

• Spirometry and pulmonary function tests (PFT)
• Peak flow monitoring
• Sputum analysis, culture and sensitivity
• Bronchoscopy and BAL (bronchoalveolar lavage)
• CT chest imaging (in cooperation with Radiology)
• Thoracentesis (pleural aspiration)
• Intercostal drain insertion

As part of BAMTH's community health mission, the Pulmonology Department runs an active TB prevention and anti-smoking program, providing free TB testing, DOTS treatment, and smoking cessation counselling.
